Audio and video content are essential components of the web strategy of any music entity, as well as many other business models. Unfortunately, the current state of mobile web browsers makes these features unusable on mobile devices unless the website is designed to work within these environments.
The When I'm Mobile website is designed to exploit the capabilities of the device being used. As the iPhone presently provides the richest web experience among mobile devices, we are able to offer the strongest audio and video experiences of our versions with the iPhone and iPod Touch. The audience can stream mp3's and watch videos simply by clicking on the links; the necessary applications to use these formats are automatically activated.
The smartphone version of When I'm Mobile is currently supported on Palm OS devices, such as the Treo, as this environment is the most consistently reliable mobile browser beyond the iPhone. The audience can either download or stream mp3's; and we have developed a streaming-only music listening experience for the Palm devices modeled on the MySpace concept, which allows listeners to hear but not take possession of the songs.
The WAP-compliant basic verson of When I'm Mobile does not support audio streaming, but a disclaimer page gives users the option to try the audio page on their phone. As more phones come to market that can support our advanced audio and video features, we will test their web browser and add them as appropriate to our list of supported devices for the rich-experience versions.
